Following success on the pony circuit, Paul Townend was welcomed into the yard of Willie Mullins aged 15 thanks to the guidance of his cousin Davy Condon, and his career has been on an upward trajectory ever since. He stepped nimbly into the footsteps of Ruby Walsh when he retired in 2019, and has ridden over 100 Grade 1 winners since on his way to five Irish Champion Jockey titles. He is yet to ride a winner for Mullins in Britain so far this season – his sole win coming for Joseph O’Brien – but the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals will be a different story for the quietly-spoken jockey from County Cork.
Biggest win this season: Banbridge in the King George VI Chase at Kempton
